Ski Touring at White Grizzly

Cat-Assisted Touring at White Grizzly is built for backcountry skiers and riders who want efficient access to serious alpine terrain without giving up the satisfaction of earning their turns.

This isn’t mechanized skiing. This is cat-assisted ski touring: mechanized access to the alpine, followed by fully human-powered days in big mountain terrain.

The snowcat gets us high and deep into our tenure, skipping the long approach and setting the stage for full, human-powered days in the mountains. Once the engines shut off, the pace slows. Skins go on. The day unfolds naturally, shaped by the snowpack, the terrain, and the group moving through it together.

TL;DR:

You start your day high in the mountains. You move through the terrain under your own power. You ski long, committing descents that carry you back down into the valley. And when the terrain naturally funnels you out, the snowcat meets you there.

How the Day Unfolds

Days begin at Wild Bear Lodge before a short transfer to the snowcat staging area. From there, the cat carries the group efficiently into treeline or alpine terrain, putting you where you actually want to be, without burning energy on the commute. The snowcat is a tool, not the point, it simply allows more time where it matters.

Once dropped off, the rest of the day happens on skins. Route choice, objectives, and pacing are dictated by conditions, weather, and the group itself. This is a professionally guided touring experience designed around quality terrain and good decision-making, not chasing numbers or ticking boxes.

Terrain, Objectives, and Decision-Making

When the snowpack allows, the terrain opens up into expansive alpine objectives, including Phaedo Peak, the Headwall Couloir, and surrounding high peaks and ridgelines. Expect open alpine faces, rolling snowfields, steep features, and classic Selkirk terrain.

These are real mountains, with real consequences—managed carefully by experienced guides who know the tenure intimately. The goal isn’t to chase numbers, but to ski the best terrain available on any given day.

One Zone, Top-to-Bottom

Most days are spent entirely within the remote White Grizzly tenure, allowing for long, continuous runs that start high in exposed alpine terrain and finish deep in classic Kootenay glades.

Well-spaced trees ski beautifully when visibility closes in, while open alpine offers scale and commitment when conditions line up. There’s no lift traffic, no crossover routes, and no competing groups—just your group, your guides, and the mountains.

On clear days, views stretch across the valley to the Purcell Mountains, with sightlines into the Selkirks and beyond. When the weather shifts, the terrain naturally funnels you into protected skiing that keeps the day flowing.

A secondary snowcat bump may be used to regain alpine elevation for another objective. It’s like Uber—but louder, and with caterpillar tracks.

Back to the Lodge

At the end of the day, transport returns the group to Wild Bear Lodge. The sauna is hot. The cold plunge is there if you want it. Gear dries. Stories surface. Tomorrow takes shape without being rushed.

You retreat to your private cabin for a quiet, deeply restorative night, ready to do it all again.

The Experience

What makes this different is the combination: three days, a small group, and a remote lodge. Cat-Assisted Touring at White Grizzly is about maximizing access, quality terrain, and shared days in the mountains.

The trip runs over three days, long enough to settle into the rhythm, disconnect from the outside world, and fully experience the place. Group sizes are intentionally small. The lodge is intimate. Each guest has a private cabin with an ensuite bathroom. Sleep matters. Privacy matters. Comfort matters.

Who it’s for

This experience is for those who still value serious days in the alpine, but appreciate fewer approaches, better descents, and thoughtful guiding. For those who trust judgment over metrics. For those who love earning their turns and love ending the day in a sauna just as much.
