January doesn’t ease into winter at White Grizzly. It shows up swinging.
By mid-January, the snowpack is deep, the terrain is filled in, and the operation is fully in rhythm. This is when cat skiing at White Grizzly shows its true character: steep terrain, dialed crews, and days that flow from first lap to last run without forcing anything.
Here’s why January is our favourite month to be here.
Deep Snow, Top to Bottom
January brings consistent storms, cold temperatures, and a snowpack that builds quickly and evenly across the tenure. There’s no hunting for powder stashes—it’s everywhere.
Steep trees, open alpine lines, pillows, and features all ski the way they’re meant to when coverage is deep and supportive. If there’s a month that highlights why steep terrain matters, it’s January.
Terrain That Matches the Crew
By January, both guides and guests are fully settled in.
Our guides have been reading groups exceptionally well, tailoring terrain to match each crew’s ability, confidence, and energy. Crews looking for steep trees, cliffs, and playful features are finding exactly that. Crews wanting fast, flowing powder lines with their skis on the ground are finding those too.
One guest put it best:
“The guides could see that our crew could really ride and tailored the terrain to what we wanted. Steep trees with cliffs and pillows for those that wanted, and steep cruise-y pow lines for anyone wanting to keep their skis on the ground.”
That balance, challenge without pressure, is the sweet spot.
This season, a new snowcat entered the rotation, and it’s made mornings noticeably smoother.
Reclining seats, more room to stretch out between runs, and just enough space for the occasional mid-lap dance party. You’ll know when it happens.
Paired with the shuttle ride to staging, mornings feel calm and unhurried. Coffee in hand. Boots dry. Legs ready. It’s a solid way to start big days in the mountains.
The Lodge in Full Rhythm
Back at the lodge, everything settles into its rhythm.
Christa nailed the bar location. You’ll know it when you see it. It’s where stories get longer, beers disappear faster, and tomorrow’s lines get planned.
And the food? The chefs have been absolutely dialing it.
One guest told us she’s visited several of BC’s most well-known backcountry lodges and said the meals at White Grizzly were the best she’s had anywhere. To be fair, she arrived during a stretch that included ribs, steak, and pistachio-encrusted chicken — but still. We’ll take it.
Another summed it up simply:
“What an EPIC trip. The terrain is spectacular, and the staff is incredibly professional, kind, and personable.”
When the Season Clicks
By January, everything is clicking.
The snowpack is filled in. Crews are settled. Guides are locked in. Days flow, meals hit, and the whole operation feels grounded and confident.
This is the part of the season where you stop counting days and just stay present. Ski deep snow with good people. Eat very well. Don’t take a single run for granted.
Want to Join Us?
Most of the season is spoken for, but there are still a few seats available later this winter.
If you’ve been watching the snow stack up and thinking yeah… maybe it’s time, this is your window.
If a date lines up, reach out. We’re happy to talk through the details or hold a spot while you check with your crew.
